For Amie Giordano, a shy and quiet woman with developmental disabilities, the dreams of independence were real, as were the uncertainties of her place in the workforce. Amie started at Ability Beyond in 2015 when she joined ATLAS, a program designed around job readiness. After graduating from ALTAS in 2016, Amie moved into Ability Beyond’s Career Development program where she expanded her skills, discovered new ones, and alongside her program manager, began to look for employment for the first time.
In February 2017, Amie started an assembly job at Tier ONE Machining in Newtown, CT. The job required precision, attention to detail, and the ability to do a repetitive task for hours at a time without losing focus. The parts that Amie assembles get packaged and shipped directly from her desk in CT to a scientist working in a lab -they need to be completed economically and perfectly every time. Through Ability Beyond’s employment programs, Amie learned the skills needed not only to do the job well, but to become one of Tier ON E’s most productive employees. She has a job she loves at a company that values her, and coworkers who respect her-and that makes her feel proud!
Like Amie, everyone Ability Beyond serves – more than 3,000 people each year throughout Connecticut and New York – want the same things we all do … a meaningful job, friends, a home where they can live independently, and opportunities to participate and be successful in their communities.
We are proud of our continued partnership with Ability Beyond, and encourage everyone to learn more about the organization here: www.abilitybeyond.org.
